Ride the Wave!

Posted February 13, 2014 By Marissa DeSantis

There aren’t too many surfers hanging out around the lake these days. Blame it on this unforgiving winter, this buzz-harshing polar vortex of evil that’s frozen everything from beard hairs to the entire Cleveland shoreline.

Still, Chillwave Double IPA waits for no one. Our cult-favorite will soon hit shelves, bringing refreshing tropical fruit flavors (thanks, Mosaic hops!) and honey malt sweetness to an otherwise gray and dismal Great Lakes winter. You’ll start seeing the wild child in our exceptional family of beers in 4-Packs and on Draft starting February 24.

There’s still time to snag an early taste at our First Wave Chillwave Pre-Release Party. We are throwing a full-on bash, with a live music set from deejays PARTY SWEAT and ALR!GHT of Cleveland’s Secret SOUL Club. Our friends at Nalu SUP & Surf are hand-crafting a one-of-a-kind Chillwave surfboard for you to pose with in front of a greenscreen photobooth (everyone will get a souvenir photo!). Nalu’s reps will also be giving Standup Paddleboard demos throughout the evening.

Of course, we’ll have plenty of food and beer. Our chefs are preparing a tropical themed feast: tequila lime shrimp tacos, roasted pork with pineapple, grilled jerk chicken wings, and a roasted pineapple, jalapeno, and brown sugar bread pudding will highlight the menu. We’ll have a special Chillwave firkin too. Remember, this is a draft-only affair. Bottle sales will not begin until Friday, February 21 at 5PM in our Gift Shop.

Can’t make our pre-release? Never fear! Chillwave Double IPA will begin hitting our markets on February 24. To get you wave-ready, we’ve got a Chillwave-inspired playlist with a couple surf classics and a couple terrible puns. Feel free to add your favorites in the comments!

“There’s No Surf In Cleveland” – The Euclid Beach Band
Cleveland’s original surf anthem (kind of). Here’s to cruising “through the rapids all day long.”

“The Chills” – Peter Bjorn and John
The whistling on PB&J’s “Young Folks” was inescapable at one point, but I’m fond of the “shicka shickas” on this track. It’s a teeth-chattering, sub-zero sound.

“Tessellate” – alt-J
Our moody, wintry way of referencing the Mosaic hops that make Chillwave so delicious.

"Let's Go Surfing" - The Drums
We're kind of living in a neo-surf rock renaissance. And it's really fun.

“The Inebriated Surfer” – The Tornadoes
You know that we encourage responsible consumption, but this slinky surf instrumental is just too rad to ignore.

“Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian” – Those Darlins
The girls give John Prine’s goofy classic a little rough-and-tumble treatment.

"He’s My Blonde Headed Stompie Wompie Real Gone Surfer Boy" – Little Pattie
Just in case you weren’t sure if surfing is great, the his-and-hers spoken bits in this goofy beach party tune should clear it up. “Gee, it’s great.” “Sure is.” “It’s great.”

“White Knuckle Grip” – Wovenhand
Rowdy and gritty, like our shoreline on a windy day. And Great Lakes surf weather is definitely white-knuckle weather.

“Walk – Don’t Run” – The Ventures
It’s a classic tune. We couldn’t make a surf mix of any kind without The Ventures.

“Cold as Ice” – Foreigner
Chillwave, cold—get it? Thanks, we’ll be here all week!

“Secret Surfin’ Spot” – Dick Dale
Once again, we had to include one of the classics. And our Great Lakes certainly qualify as a “secret surfin’ spot”.

“Fall In”- Cloud Nothings
A new Cleveland classic to get you stoked for beach season.

“Just Like Honey” – Jesus and Mary Chain
So smooth, so dreamy. Like that caramel-honey malt backbone. Mmm.
