Beer Blogger Feature: Midwest Beer and Brewing

Beer Blogger Spotlight:  Midwest Beer and Brewing
Twitter:  @midwestbeerblog

It’s been awhile since we featured a beer blogger so let’s check in and see what’s going on in the Midwest with beer enthusiast Ethan and his blog, Midwest Beer and Brewing.

Ethan has always been a huge supporter of Midwest breweries (check out his post regarding’s annual top brewers list). He started Midwest Beer and Brewing in October 2009 after a visit to his local Chicago brewery, the Half Acre Beer Company. Ethan spent time speaking with the founders and brewers and occasionally volunteered with the brewery. He was inspired to get back into homebrewing and connect with other craft beer enthusiasts regarding industry news, brewing trends and events. It was important for him to start a site dedicated to “trying, making, sharing and discussing craft beer in the Midwest and beyond”. Two and a half years later, Ethan has a site full of useful information any beer snob or homebrewer can appreciate.

Ethan appreciates beer styles that are different and push the limits (he needs to make a trip to GLBC for a Firkin Thursday!). He also shared with me that he thought GLBC’s Edmund Fitzgerald Porter was the brew that “opened my eyes to what beer could be - a delicious, exquisite labor of love”; I could not agree with him more!

If you are a homebrewer, what is your favorite beer style to brew? Those who comment below will be randomly selected to win a GLBC t-shirt!

my favorite type of beer to brew are French Saison's. Complex flavors in a simple beer!

I really enjoy making IPA's the most. Currently i am fermenting a pumkin ale and an irish red ale. When i have money i always make a good imperial IPA much like the ever so delicious lake erie monster :) yum!

I love brewing Belgian beers - tripels, Belgian Golden Strong and quadrupels. The recipes are so simple but the challenge is coaxing all of the fruity smells and tastes from the yeast. I also enjoy the patience involved in making a good barley wine or imperial stout.

The one that I am most excited about is a "Dillmunder" (a dill infused Dortmunder). To sample my idea, I let some dill steep in one GLBC's Dortmunder Gold's a few minutes. Actually brewing my own has been a bit more elusive. The fact that it will be a lager had me scurrying to find a cheap fridge to keep it cooler for the fermentation, now I'm having issues finding a good german lager yeast.

With all the anticipation going into this brew, hopefully it will have a great payoff.

Favorite so far was a Black IPA (GLBC should bottle one!). Just put 2 different fresh hop batches in fermentors though, so hopefully things will change soon.

My husband and I are still fairly new to the homebrewing world. So far, my favorite might be the Christmas Ale, but it's nowhere near GLBC Christmas Ale. I'm also really looking forward to brewing a pumpkin ale this fall.
