Han Solo and Chewbacca. Thelma and Louise. André 3000 and Big Boi. Some of the best things come in pairs, but it's tough to imagine a duo more iconic than pizza and beer. Sure, these two juggernauts of mouth-watering awesomeness are amazing on their own, but when paired together? Well, strap in folks, because you're about to treat your taste buds to one of the most delicious (and easiest) beer and food pairings known to humankind.
"There's really no wrong answers when it comes to pairing beer with pizza," says GLBC Brewpub Manager and Certified Cicerone Bob Voss. "Almost any style of beer can work with just about any pizza depending on what kind of flavors you'd like to enhance or complement."
In celebration of National Pizza Day happening Friday, February 9, we're offering $5 off pizzas all day at the brewpub. Take the guesswork out of deciding what to order and enjoy a few recommendations for which beer will take your pizza dinner to the next level.
The Pizza: Hop Pepper Pizza
Hop-infused red, green, and yellow peppers, mozzarella cheese, goat cheese, and onion
The Beer: Burning River Pale Ale
Why It Works: This beer and pizza pairing is all about matching intensities. The sweetness of the peppers complements the subtle caramel flavor of Burning River, but it's the hoppy flavors that really shine. When mixed with a little oil, the citrus notes from the hops accentuate the saltiness of the fresh mozzarella and goat cheese.
The Pizza: Spinach & Artichoke Pizza
Sautéed spinach, artichokes, mozzarella cheese, and cream cheese
The Beer: Turntable Pils
Why It Works: Pilsners are a no-brainer when it comes to pizza, but Turntable Pils does especially well with this light and flavorful pie. The lively carbonation of the brew helps cut through the creaminess of the cheeses. Brewed with a lighter grain bill, the bready flavors of Turntable Pils is a great match to the crispy, toasty crust.
The Pizza: Spicy Sicilian Pizza
Hot Italian sausage and pepperoni from Czuchraj Meats, mozzarella cheese, marinara, sautéed onions, banana peppers, and red pepper flakes
The Beer: Hop Madness Double IPA
Why It Works: A big flavored pizza calls for a big flavored beer! Something needs to stand up to those spicy flavors, and our aggressively hopped Double IPA is the perfect choice to complement the hot Italian sausage and pepperoni. The higher alcohol content of Hop Madness cuts through the saltiness and grease, while the bitterness from the hops balances out the sweetness of the marinara sauce.
The Pizza: Killbuck Valley Mushroom Pizza
Mushrooms, fresh rosemary, leeks, garlic oil, Montforte Bleu cheese, and mozzarella cheese
The Beer: Edmund Fitzgerald Porter
Why It Works: An iconic beer matched up with a fan-favorite brewpub pie. The bitter, roasty undertones of our porter will bring out the earthiness of the mushrooms, while the sweetness of the chocolate malt will help balance the saltiness of the Montforte bleu cheese. A match made in pizza and beer heaven.
