Pint glass filled with Mexican Lager with Lime, garnished with a lime wedge, sitting next to a can, 6-pack, and full limes.

What do you think of when you hear ‘Mexican Lager?’ For many, the image of beach chairs, crystal clear water, and a cooler filled with fizzy yellow beer might jump to mind. But it may surprise you that the origin of this now-seemingly ubiquitous cerveza lies not in the sandy white beaches of Mexico, nor even in the Americas at all, but in a city 6,200 miles away: Vienna, Austria. How did this unlikely transatlantic influence come about? Crack open a can of Mexican Lager with Lime, and let’s find out!

Like their English neighbors to the north, the Spanish colonists who settled the area now known as Mexico had difficulty brewing beer in the New World. Hops were hard to come by, and imports of malted barley were inconsistent, forcing brewers to use unrefined whole cane sugar (or piloncillo) and corn as sources for fermentable sugars. Heavy taxation from the royal crown overseas further stymied Spanish colonial brewing.

But after the people of Mexico achieved their independence in 1821, the country’s door was opened to immigrants from other parts of Europe. By the 1860’s, an influx of Austrians increased many times over when Mexico’s European creditors briefly installed an Austrian puppet emperor. Needless to say, the move didn’t sit well with the people of Mexico, and their resistance to French aggression resulted in the Cinco de Mayo celebrations we have today. However, even after the Battle of Puebla was won, many of the Austrian transplants were there to stay, and so was their main trade of choice: brewing.

Eliot Ness Amber Lager with Mug

Naturally, these Austrian brewers had a thirst for Vienna Lager, a bready, toasty, and amber-hued favorite from their homeland not unlike our own Eliot Ness Amber Lager. (Fun fact: Eliot Ness was actually the first beer GLBC brewed over 35 years ago!) But brewing a cold-fermented beer in Mexico presented some obvious challenges. Due to the region’s warm temperatures and lack of available technology, it wasn’t until the 1890’s that brewers were able to successfully lager beer in Mexico. The first to do so was Santiago Graf, who, thanks to the development of railroads, was able to ship proper lagering equipment from the U.S. to his brewery in Toluca, Mexico. Graf crafted a lager of utmost quality, importing his hops from Europe, malting his own barley sourced from the U.S., and taking advantage of Mexico’s alkaline water to soften the sharpness coming from his darker malts. The result was a deeper yet mellower Vienna Lager that gained widespread popularity. In fact, some “Graf-style” Vienna Lagers are still brewed today.

However, this darker, fuller style is more a cousin than a direct relative to today’s modern Mexican Lager. As Graf’s version of Vienna-style lager gained popularity in Mexico, the style was almost completely out of fashion in his home country thanks to the incredibly fast-growing popularity of Czech-style pilsner. It was only a matter of time until the new “it” beer of Austria made its way across the Atlantic. Once Mexican-based brewers realized a pilsner-style lager could easily be made with the ingredients available to them, the once dark and toasty Mexican Lager evolved into the light and refreshing brew we know today.

And now, almost 130 years after the first Mexican-brewed lager was created, Mexican-style lagers have firmly found their place within the craft beer landscape. Our brewers honor the style’s storied tradition by crafting our own Mexican-style lager with flaked corn, but keep things innovative with the addition of real lime peel and purée for a zesty yet refreshing zip of citrus. The result? A laid back lager that shines as bright as the summer sun.

12 oz. Can 6-Pack of Return of the Lake Erie Monster Double IPA.

Now playing: the Double Feature IPA Series! Our new rotating line pairs classic and remastered Double IPAs with epic cinematic artwork and even bigger thrills in 12 oz. Can 6-Packs and Draft, each available for a limited time. Let’s preview these can’t-miss hop-forward productions.

The Double Feature IPA Series premiere? Return of the Lake Erie Monster Double IPA, a colossal new remake of our cult classic Lake Erie Monster Double IPA. This refreshing new “sequel” features the same bold, flavorful hop character Lake Erie Monster is known for with a lighter, more drinkable body. Like any good sequel, it took great skill, attention to detail, and respect for the original for our brewers to craft Return of the Lake Erie Monster. Core hops Simcoe and Willamette retain classic hop flavors, while Idaho 7 and Azacca make cameos for a more modern touch. Caramel malt and hop bitterness are cast in supporting roles, leading to lighter mouthfeel and easier sipping. And, of course, the infamous South Bay Bessie still fiercely graces our label art. The result? Return of the Lake Erie Monster, a Double IPA remastered, and deviously drinkable.

Launching next is summer blockbuster Spacewalker Hazy Double IPA. Few movie genres are as universally beloved as sci-fi, and few beer styles have as many die-hard fans as the Hazy Double IPA, so Spacewalker is poised to break some box office records! Spacewalker features a blast of tropical and stone fruit aromas from an otherworldly helping of American hops Mosaic, Zappa, and Calypso. Wheat and oats provide a full, rounded mouthfeel, the ideal launching pad for Spacewalker’s intergalactic hop flavors. One big sip, and you’ll enter into a hazy hop multiverse of massive proportions, right there alongside the colorful space adventurer on the can.

The Double Feature IPA Series finale is a stone cold classic and fan favorite: Nosferatu Double Red IPA. Like the silent vampire film which inspired it, our Double Red IPA was almost scarily cutting edge when it was first brewed in the early 90’s, helping set the standard for the hop-forward red IPAs that still have their devoted followers today. While remakes can be great, sometimes the original is too good to touch, and that’s how our brewers feel about Nosferatu. We’ve kept the same bitter Cascade and Simcoe hop fangs, and the blood red hue that Special Roast malt provides. Sink your teeth into this rich, roasty, red Double IPA with a frightfully delectable bite that’s crept into hophead hearts for decades.

The Midwest. A nice area of the country. Our home in all seasons (and we do mean alllll of them). We have an underrated food and beer scene (one visit to Cleveland will prove it, promise). And while coastal beer styles can sometimes feel a little snobbish, we like our beer like we like our people: Nice. Midwest Nice, to be exact. And no two beers are quite as nice as our Midwest IPA and Midwest Hazy IPA, both available year-round.

Don’t worry, we already hear you, curious reader: “What’s a Midwest IPA, anyways?” Well, you’ve come to the right place to find out. While you won’t see the definition of Midwest IPA in style guidelines or beer history books, it’s a beer style that’s been lowkey thriving for decades, though you might not know it from its lack of coverage (sound familiar?)

12 oz. Can of Midwest IPA in front of a filled pint glass and Midwest IPA 6-Pack.

Like many things in our region, Midwest IPA is the best of both worlds: namely, the worlds of West Coast IPA and New England IPA. The former features a brilliantly clear appearance and lean body. However, the style often also bruises the palate with intense bitterness, which is a turn off for many beer drinkers. The latter boasts incredibly pungent hop aromatics and a much lower, more approachable bitterness. Yet, this style also has a hefty body that weighs down the palate and dampens drinkability.

True to its name, Midwest IPA meets right in the middle. Lighter body and pleasant clarity like West Coast IPA? Check. Lower bitterness with popping aromas like New England IPA? Check. This pleasant combination makes for a beer you can enjoy over and over again. A beer that will fit right in at just about any function with family or friends—you know they’re going to get along just fine. Approachable. Friendly. You know… nice. And that’s exactly the kind of beer our brewing team sought to create. “Our goal for Midwest IPA is to make an IPA that embodies Midwest culture: friendly, enjoyable, no-nonsense, yet subtle,” says COO Steven Pauwels.

We take a modern approach to Midwest IPA. While there’s a touch of Cascade, the original American hop, the rest of the hop profile is all new school. We use a brand new variety called Triumph late in the brewhouse to provide that gentle touch of bitterness, then load up the fermenter with Strata and Citra hops to deliver the blast of American hop flavor the modern IPA drinker loves, including notes of “citrus, peach, and bubblegum,” per Pauwels. Honey Malt supplies just a kiss of underlying sweetness and a round, soft mouthfeel to keep bitterness in check while letting those hops shine. It’s all about balance. The result is “a straightforward Midwest IPA to enjoy every day,” says Pauwels.

Although Midwest Hazy IPA naturally leans a bit more New England IPA than West Coast IPA, it still embodies the same “nice” character of its sibling beer. While wheat and oats give Midwest Hazy IPA a soft, pillowy mouthfeel, it isn’t as full or sweet as some New England IPAs. This gives Midwest Hazy IPA the drinkability and approachability that’s consistent with the Midwest mentality, while heaping additions of Azacca, Idaho 7, Strata, and Sabro hops after the boil deliver the tropical and stone fruit flavors expected from a Hazy IPA. Twice as nice!

Because these IPAs are so darn likeable, we’re making sure it’s as easy as possible for you to meet them. Need to fill the fridge? Pick up a few 6-Packs while grocery shopping. Just looking to try a new beer tonight? Grab a 19.2 oz. can from the corner store. You can even hang out with Midwest IPA, Midwest Hazy IPA, and their cousins (like Vibacious Double IPA) in the rotating Hop Madness IPA Variety Pack. And it’s no shock that such an approachable IPA can pair with almost any food, from a hearty hot dish to good old kielbasa and pierogi (and, yes, grilled corn). No matter where you are or what you’re doing, these are your IPAs. That’s why we put the entire Great Lakes region right on the cans!

Midwest IPA and Midwest Hazy IPA, the unofficial IPAs of Midwest Nice, are available now everywhere our beer is sold. We’d love to know what you think, so hit us up on social with hashtag #MidwestIPA. Use our Beer Finder to find some near you.
