GLBC ascends in national rankings of American Craft Breweries
April 18, 2011--CLEVELAND, OHIO--Great Lakes Brewing Company (GLBC) climbed from the 23rd to the 22nd largest craft brewery in the U.S. according to The New Brewer, The Journal of the Brewer’s Association. GLBC reported 91,189 barrels sold in 2010. GLBC also ranked as the 31st largest brewery in the US (Anheuser–Busch Inc. ranked 1st). GLBC does not contract brew; 100% of product is produced onsite in its Cleveland-based brewery.
GLBC spent last July and most of August enmeshed in major capital improvements throughout its brewery. The $7M investment, financed through equity, $3M tax free industrial revenue bonds and $3M recovery zone bonds through Cuyahoga County, allows GLBC to make complete use of its physical plant as it exists today. Improvements included a new centrifuge, which removes yeast from the beer before bottling and kegging; brewhouse additions for increased production speed and quality; filler, rinser, conveyors and packaging efficiency upgrades; a new grain silo, flooring and piping; and lastly, the installation of additional storage and fermentation tanks (more tanks may be added in the future; plans are also in place for a new spent grain tank, spent yeast tank and docks). In addition to GLBC’s production growth, the company added 15 newly created positions despite turbulent economic times and looks to create at least nine more positions over the next couple of years.
Great Lakes Brewing Company, which is comprised of a brewery and brewpub, was founded in 1988 by brothers Pat and Dan Conway as the first microbrewery in the state of Ohio and today remains Ohio’s most celebrated and award-winning brewer of lagers and ales. GLBC currently employs 140 people and its distribution area extends throughout the Great Lakes region and surrounding states.
